Management Company and Building Owner Charged In Toddlers Death

esplanadeThe owner and building management company of an Upper West Side building have been charged with  Local Law 11 violations that led to the death last year of a 2-year-old girl.

From the New York Daily News:

Little Greta Greene and her grandmother, Susan Frierson, were sitting on a sidewalk bench on May 17, 2015 when both were hit by bricks falling from The Esplanade, a seniors home at 305 West End Ave.

“When you own a building, you have a responsibility to maintain it — you don’t just get to cash the rent checks and call it a day,” said Buildings Commissioner Rick Chandler.

The girl died of head injuries the next day. Her grandmother, 59, suffered serious leg injuries but survived.

Esplanade Venture Partnership and Alexander Scharf, its managing agent and principal majority shareholder, were charged Tuesday with violating city codes that require exterior walls to be maintained in safe conditions, according to the Department of Buildings.
